The Great Migration: Africa's Most Incredible Wildlife Event

The Great Migration in Serengeti is one of the most awe-inspiring natural events on Earth. Each year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by 200,000 zebras and 300,000 gazelles, embark on an 800km circular journey through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. This continuous movement creates dramatic river crossings and attracts predators like lions, cheetahs, and crocodiles, offering some of Africa's most thrilling wildlife viewing opportunities.
Great Migration Seasonal Highlights
December - March
The migration settles in Southern Serengeti and Ndutu for the calving season. Thousands of wildebeest are born, attracting predators like lions and cheetahs.
April - May
Herds start moving towards Central Serengeti during the green season. It’s quiet, scenic, and ideal for peaceful, budget-friendly safaris.
June
Wildebeest gather in the Western Serengeti and face their first challenge—crossing the Grumeti River filled with crocodiles and other predators.
July - October
This is the peak of the migration in the Northern Serengeti – Mara River. Huge herds cross the river, offering dramatic wildlife scenes and big cat activity.
November - December
The herds move back south through Central to Southern Serengeti. They return to Ndutu for fresh grazing before the next calving season begins.
